Suicide is a deeply sensitive topic that affects individuals, families, and communities worldwide. At GibSams, we believe that everyone can play a role in suicide prevention. Our Suicide First Aid Course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and confidence to recognise warning signs, intervene compassionately, and connect people to the support they need.
What is Suicide First Aid?
Suicide First Aid is a skills-based training programme that teaches participants how to identify and respond to someone experiencing suicidal thoughts. The course covers practical intervention techniques, communication strategies, and resource sharing to ensure that help is accessible when it’s needed most.
Recognising the Warning Signs
Understanding the warning signs is the first step in prevention. These may include:
- Sudden withdrawal from friends and activities
- Noticeable changes in mood or behaviour
- Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live
- Expressing thoughts about death or suicide
Intervention Techniques
Our course draws on evidence-based methods, such as those taught in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). Participants learn how to:
- Approach someone they’re concerned about in a non-judgemental way
- Listen actively and empathetically
- Assess risk and safety
- Encourage the person to seek professional help
Communication Matters
Language is powerful. We encourage the use of person-first language, such as “people experiencing suicidal thoughts,” and recommend avoiding stigmatising phrases. Compassionate, non-judgemental listening can make a significant difference.

Hope and Recovery
Recovery is possible, and help is available. By sharing stories of hope and resilience, we aim to inspire others to seek support and remind everyone that they are not alone.
Differences Between Suicide First Aid and Suicide First Aid Lite
While both Suicide First Aid (SFA) and Suicide First Aid Lite (SFA Lite) aim to equip individuals with the skills to support those at risk of suicide, there are key differences:
- Duration: SFA is a full-day course (6-8 hours) offering comprehensive training, while SFA Lite is a half-day course (3-4 hours) focused on raising awareness and basic intervention skills.
- Content: SFA covers in-depth suicide intervention techniques, understanding causes, and practical skills for supporting someone in crisis. SFA Lite provides a foundational overview, teaching participants how to identify risk and refer individuals to appropriate support.
- Accreditation: SFA is accredited by City & Guilds and includes the option to earn credits upon completion of an assessed assignment. SFA Lite is assured by City & Guilds, with participants able to register for a digital badge and e-certificate.
In summary, SFA is ideal for those seeking comprehensive, accredited training in suicide intervention, while SFA Lite is suited for individuals looking for a shorter, introductory course focused on awareness and referral skills.
Why Take the SFA Lite Course?
The Suicide First Aid Lite (SFA Lite) course offers a practical introduction to suicide prevention. One key benefit is that it increases your confidence and ability to recognise when someone may be at risk and to have supportive conversations that could save a life. The course is accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) and is accessible to everyone, whether you are a professional or a community member.
If you have ever wondered how you could help someone in crisis, SFA Lite provides the tools and understanding you need to make a real difference.
